Don't fear scarf joints. Yes, scarf joints can decrease the shear strength of a beam. But if you pick the right type of scarf, size it correctly, and place it correctly it doesn't really matter. Japanese scarf joints are usually 2.5x the depth of the beam. Western scarf joints for timber framing are usually 3-4x the depth of the beam. Also, scarf joints must be oriented and placed correctly. We made quite a few scarf joints these last weeks for our new dorm house. This type of joinery allows you to span a long length with two timbers.
