Mausolos ruled Caria in the mid-4th century BC as a satrap under Persian authority, but he governed in a distinctly Greek style. He made Halicarnassus his capital and invested heavily in monumental building, reshaping the city and presenting himself as a Hellenistic ruler before the Hellenistic age had fully begun.
